Fotomontagework combining imagery from Gujarat in India and London Southall.

Walking in London Southall, smelling the perfumes in the air,
listening to the Cd players, eating the food - surrounded by flashing saris in millions of colours...
The feeling that these immigrants are living in the West, but their minds and souls and daily habits stay connected with their homes, their families back in the East.

A project which tries to show connections, similarities and differencies, between the 3000 miles distant worlds of Gujarat in India and Southall in London...
Combining fragments of images - like the overlaying and intermingling of thoughts, visual flashbacks, memories in an immigrants mind.

The images too, are taken over a gap of time.
The black&white images from Gujarat were photographed in 2000.
The colour digital pictues in London Southall in 2005.

These are fictions which, like poetry, rely on metaphor.
References, allusions, and analogies create a surreal
atmosphere that leads the viewer to another reality.
Since 1990 I work with the different montage and collages techniques. Coming from the traditional cut and paste technique I moved on to multiple exposures in the printing process.
Recently I work with the "digital darkroom", using its possibilities to synthesize - to weave disparate materials into a single continuum.
Although my working methods have radically altered, my interests remain the same. The content of my previous work has flowed naturally onto the screen and into the images before you.

Travelling in Gujarat - India in January 2001

Gujarat is home to number of groups that settled from outside including Huns, Sakas, Muslims, Parsis. Gujarat is divided mostly along caste lines. The largest caste is Koli or Koli Patel which makes up 20% of the population. The second largest is Patidar or Kanbi which makes up roughly 15% of the population. Other major groups are Adivasi, Rajput, Vaniya, Anavil, Harijan, Lohana, and number of other small sub-castes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gujarat

The Rabaris are a nomadic tribe always wandering with their herds. The origin of this tribe has been traced back to Sind and Afghanistan though many aspects of this tribe still remain a puzzle for anthropologists. They have been classified into three distinct groups, namely Vagadia, Dhabaria, and Kachhi. Women of this tribe engage themselves in making elaborate embroidery pieces while the men spend their time tending to their camels and sheep.The Meghwals are masters of weaving cotton and wool as also embroidery and appliqué work.

Gujarat was hit by a devastating earthquake on January 26, 2001 at 8:46, which claimed 10,000 lives, injured another 30,000 people and severely affected the lives of forty million people in the region.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2001_Gujarat_earthquake

This show took place in Florence in 2001 in an abbandoned prison,
the same location were the pictures were taken...

Ich weiß nicht, was die Zeit ist. Ich weiß nicht, welches ihr wahres Maß ist, falls sie überhaupt eines hat. Ich weiß, daß die Uhrzeit falsch ist: sie unterteilt die Zeit räumlich, von außen. Die gefühlte Zeit, weiß ich, ist ebenfalls falsch: sie unterteilt nicht die Zeit, sondern unsere Empfindung von der Zeit. Die Zeit der Träume ist gleichfalls falsch; in ihnen streifen wir das eine Mal eine verlängerte, das andere Mal eine verkürzte Zeit und, was wir erleben, ist übereilig oder langsam infolge irgendeines Vorgangs beim Verfließen der Zeit, dessen Natur ich nicht kenne.
Zuweilen meine ich, alles sei falsch, und die Zeit sei nur ein Rahmen,um das einzufassen, was ihr fremd ist. In der Erinnerung an mein vergangenes Leben sind die Zeiten auf sinnlosen Ebenen angeordnet, und ich bin bei einer bestimmten Begebenheit meiner feierlichen fünfzehn Lebensjahre jünger als bei einem anderen Vorkommnis meiner unter Spielzeugen sitzenden Kindheit.
Das Bewußtsein verwirrt sich mir, wenn ich an diese Dinge denke. Ich ahne einen Irrtum in alledem; ich weiß jedoch nicht, auf welcher Seite er steckt. Es ist, als wohnte ich einer Art Zauberkunststück'bei, bei dem ich mich, weil es ein solches ist, betrogen fühle, aber dennoch nicht herausbringen kann, worin Technik oder Mechanik des Betruges bestanden haben.
Dann überkommen mich absurde Gedanken, die ich jedoch nicht als vollkommen absurd abweisen kann... Ich überlege mir, ob die Bewegungen wirklich synchron sind, die die gleiche Zeit beanspruchen, in denen ich eine Zigarette rauche, diesen Abschnitt niederschreibe und auf dunkle Weise nachdenke.
Von zwei Rädern an derselben Achse können wir uns vorstellen, daß immer eines weiter vorn rollt, auch wenn es sich nur um Bruchteile von Millimetern handelt... Sind das unnütze Betrachtungen? Ich weiß es wohl. Sind es Illusionen der Betrachtung? Das räume ich ein. Was ist das aber für ein Ding, das uns mißt ohne Maß und uns tötet, ohne zu sein? Und in diesen Augenblicken, in denen ich nicht einmal weiß, ob die Zeit existiert, fühle ich sie wie eine Person und habe Lust einzuschlafen.

I have travelled to know, to see and to feel. Capturing situations that touch something inside of me, taking photographs becomes secondary. Collecting instants and atmospheres, I'm not many interested in showing an action, or telling a fact. These are invented images, choosen from a state of mind; often "recognised" images (found as an answer of something that was already there).
At last, printing a small "diary book", I choose the sequence, rediscovering the running of the story.

I work with a Minox. This small camera allows me to get close to the people, without interrupting the developing of the situation. A sensitive film and the manageable camera allow me to realise my photos in every light condition. I don't feel any technical limitation. In this way the use of the camera becomes simple and natural, like using a pen. Almost feels like an extension of my finger.
In the printing process I use Black and White, because it seems abstract to me, and belongs to the imaginary. It is a way of searching the essence of things without stopping at the surface.

After my studies of classic reportage photography, I soon began to avoid the realism, starting to tell my own "stories", instead of documenting reality.

"Innere Horizonte"

Diese Arbeit entstand aus dem Bedürfnis, meine "innere" Bilderwelt bewußter kennenzulernen.
Seit vielen Jahren mache ich eine persönliche, oft in Buchform als Erzählung angeordnete, Reisefotografie. Es tauchte di Frage auf: Ich bin keine Reportage - und keine Dokumentarfotografin. Was will ich eigentlich mir und den anderen vermitteln? Welches sind meine Bilderwelten? - Mir wurde klar, daß ich nicht die Wirklichkeit beschreiben möchte, sondern meine Eindrücke an jenem Ort, in jenem Moment.
Die Form der Montage ermöglicht es mir, die Atmosphäre zu intensivieren und zu komplettieren. Bei der Zusammenstellung der Fotoarbeiten gehe ich nicht von einer Absicht aus. Durch "anprobieren" verschiedener Elemente, "wiedererkennen" erinnerter Atmosphären, komme ich zum gewünschten Bild. Ein latentes Bild ist aus der irrealen Erlebniswelt aufgetaucht, visualisiert worden.
Die Montagetechnik ermöglicht es mir, spielerisch surreale Ebenen zu schaffen, auf andere Realitäten zu verweisen, die jenseits der Oberfläche des Fotopapieres liegen.

The artist Sabine Korth breathes new live into the figurative and narrative form of the photomontage, an expressive technique that flourished in Germany during the fertile season of the avant-garde movements. In real life and in her pictures, she undertakes a journey from South to North. Places, faces, animals, objects, signs belonging to Egypt, Mexico, Venezuela, Cuba, the Ivory Coast, Ghana and Zimbabwe come together to form imaginative compositions that set before our eyes that South of the world of which we know little or nothing. In the second stage of her work, Sabine Korth mixes images of the world of the South with images of the North, those of our European cities, inventing new visual realities that allude to the true mingling of cultures that characterizes our dawning multiethnic society. An ideal journey which brings together different cultural forms and stimulates reflection on the subject, not through the classical documentary form but through a creative one which appeals directly to the sphere of the imagination.
